The United States’ founding was explicitly a project in self-government based on democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law; in opposition to what it viewed as the tyranny of the Old World??

'Democracy' was not explicit, certainly. The Founders loathed democracy, made no mention of it in any draft, and left us with a republic that masquerades as a democracy. That's why Congress never does what we want. It answers to our 'optimes', our best and wealthiest few, just as Rome's did.

'The central point of our research is that economic elites and organized business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence'. Gilens & Page.
